A prayer
Original writing, not a quotation of Scripture.
Lord, we're surrounded by boxes and half-built furniture, and I'm tired in every muscle. Bless this new home before we've even unpacked. Let it be a place of peace and honest conversation, where friends feel welcome and your name is spoken.
Help us get to know the neighbors, find our way around, and settle in. Unless you build the house, we labor in vain, so build this one. In Jesus' name, Amen.
More prayers for a new home
Before the move
We're packing, and I keep finding things I forgot I owned. Go ahead of us to the new address, Father. Bless the people we're leaving, and give us a calm last week in this house.
Finding a place to live
We need somewhere to live, God, and the search is wearing us down. Open the right door at a price we can carry. While we wait for your answer, keep us patient with landlords and with each other.
Blessing the house
Bless the kitchen, where we'll argue about the dishes and still eat together. Bless the front door, so that whoever knocks feels welcome. Let this house be known as a peaceful one.
A housewarming prayer
Thank you for this roof and these walls, and for the chance to invite you in before the guests arrive. Fill the table with good talk, and let everyone who visits leave lighter than they came.
The first night
The sounds are strange and the bed is in the wrong place, Jesus. Sit with us in the dark until it starts to feel like ours. Tomorrow we'll go looking for the coffee. Tonight, keep us safe and let us sleep.
Bible verses for a new home
Unless Yahweh builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all rare and beautiful treasure.
My people will live in a peaceful habitation, in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting places, though hail flattens the forest, and the city is leveled completely.
Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”
If it seems evil to you to serve Yahweh, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.”
