Peace
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
This is said on the last night, hours before everything falls apart. That is worth knowing before you reach the word peace, because it rules out the easy version. Whatever is being handed over here, it is not the absence of trouble. The trouble was already at the door.
The phrase “not as the world gives” is doing quiet work. The world gives peace by removing the threat, which means its peace lasts exactly as long as the calm does. This is offered while the threat is still standing.
The last line is an instruction, and instructions assume you can act on them. Not a feeling to summon. Something closer to a door you decide to stop reopening.
