Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound, to proclaim the year of Yahweh’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be glorified.
A prayer

Lord, someone I love is grieving and I feel helpless to fix it. Help me remember I am not supposed to fix it, I am just supposed to show up. Give me the right words, or better, the wisdom to sit quietly when words would only get in the way.
Let me weep with them instead of rushing them toward feeling better. Comfort them through me if you can, and comfort them directly in the places I cannot reach. In Jesus' name, Amen.
