Stillness
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
Most of us read this line as an instruction to calm down. It is closer to an instruction to stop fighting. The psalm around it is loud: nations in uproar, mountains falling into the sea, a city that holds because God is in it. The stillness is not the absence of trouble. It is what you do while the trouble is still going on.
There is a difference between being still and being idle. Idle is having nothing to do. Still is having something to do and setting it down for a moment, because the outcome was never resting on you in the first place.
If you are reading this at the end of a long day, you do not have to solve anything to take this verse seriously. You only have to stop, and let the second half of the sentence be true without your help.
