Lord, I'm sitting beside someone I love, listening to them breathe and knowing it won't be long. I don't know what to say, so let my being here say it. Give them peace, and ease any pain or fear.
If there is anything still unsaid between us, give us a moment for it. Walk with them through this valley as you promised, and receive them gently. Hold me too, in the hours afterward.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

For the person
Be near to my friend tonight. Take away fear and make each breath easier if you can. Let them know they are loved and that they aren't alone in this room. Receive them gently when it is time.
For the family
Our family is spread across this room and across time zones, God. Hold the ones still on the road. Give us gentle words for each other and patience when we get sharp. Let nobody here carry regret alone.
For myself at the bedside
Jesus, I don't know what to do with my hands. Let me sit still. Help me say thank you and I'm sorry and I love you while there is still time, and let it be enough.
For peace in the room
Lord of the valley, you promised to walk through it with us. Walk with them now. Quiet the room and quiet the fear. Let peace come the way you said it would.
After they have gone
The room is quiet now. Thank you, God, for all the years. I'm too tired to pray well, so I'll say one line and trust you with the rest. They're yours. Hold me too.
Bible verses for someone who is dying
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.
